Maybe you’ve never hired anyone before or you weren’t satisfied with the people you hired in the past. Hiring people can be nerve-wracking, as hiring the wrong person means time and money training someone who just can’t fundamentally grasp the job.

Tip #1: Look At Practical Experience Over Schooling
Sure, it’s great if someone has a college degree. It’s even better if they have a degree in the field that you are hiring for. Still, a good body of work should trump that piece of paper any day.
I’ve met plenty of talented people without a degree, plenty of useless people with a degree and a people with a degree who are good at what they do.
Nowadays, people can learn any skill online. Or, they may have done some time as an intern somewhere. Either way, if they have a portfolio to back up their résumé, you may want to consider giving them a shot.
Tip #2: Attitude Is KEY
I’ve sat across from a lot of VERY talented people. I’ve looked over their body of work, I’ve looked at their experience and everything looks on point. Then we start talking and…they’ve lost me.
It doesn’t matter how good someone is, if they’re hard to put up with, you don’t want them on your team. If you ask someone to do something and you constantly get an eye roll or a sneer, you are going to regret hiring them and be hesitant to give them more work. What a waste of time and training!
I’m not saying hire anyone with a smile, but an upbeat attitude goes a long way.
Tip #3: Ask Good Interview Questions
Some people are in such a rush, they don’t care about the interview process. They’ll get people going without as much thought as a few personal questions and then they wonder why they cave under pressure.
You need the right people and the only way of getting them is asking the right questions.
Put some time into your interview questions and pay attention to what they say. Ask them about past events and try to keep questions concrete. You’ll get a better feel for who they are and if their values line up with yours.
There are many things that go into hiring a great employee, but these three will at least give you a better idea of what to look for and will get you on the right path to hiring the person that you want on your team.
