3 Reasons To Never Hire Family

If you own your business you are entirely responsible for getting your own staff. Many business owners make the mistake of hiring their family instead of people they have never met before. There are a couple of reasons why you should never under any condition hire your family to work at your business with you. Here are three reasons to never hire family.

Most people go with this option because they are close to their family, but the truth is it will make more problems than it creates. Here are some of the key reasons why you need to look for fresh new hires if you need employees, as opposed to people who are related to you.

Lack Of Work Ethics

While this is not always the case, more often than not this is what happens when you bring the family in to work for you. They have this idea in their head that because you guys are related they can get away with anything they want. There have been cases of close family members having the following behavior due to being hired by someone close to them:

Stolen money

Stolen merchandise

Careless behavior

These are just three of the big ones, there are plenty of other problems that will inevitably come up when you hire family.

Disgruntled Employees

Another big issue that comes up when people hire family is that the other non-family employees tend to show some hostility. They can feel like the relative gets a “get out of jail free” card, and it can be disheartening if you feel like someone who has not worked there as long as you is above you based on blood.

The flip side to this is your employees might walk on eggshells around your relative employee. They are going to be well aware of who they are and might be suspicious that they are going to go back and tell you everything they do wrong, and this creates a hostile work environment.

Hostile Personal Life

Work and family need to be two separate things for this reason above all else. There are two very awkward situations that could come up if your relative is also an employee. First of all, could you imagine your brother who works with you bringing up work-related things over Thanksgiving dinner, it would make the whole situation very uncomfortable.

The other reason is let’s say you have to fire one of your relatives for simply not doing their job. Your personal life is going to get very hostile very quickly. The rest of your family is going to take sides, and no matter what side they pick it isn’t going to end well for you or the relative you fired.

As you can quickly imagine now, hiring relatives to work for you might not be the best idea. Even if it appears as though it would work out, you never want to risk problems within the family or being stuck with a poor worker because you had hired someone within the family.
