A prayer can be one of the most effective and powerful activities we can do to get us out of troubles, heal our sickness and pain, ask for forgiveness, request for guidance and protection, achieve our life’s goals and wishes, or simply give our thanks to the Lord.
However, not all prayers are the same. Not all that we ask or request from God will be given to us. He may hear all our prayers. He may answer all of them. But God doesn’t always give an answer that’s perfectly what we want to hear or see.
Perhaps, you are praying every night and day. Maybe you are always sharing prayers on social media to make them louder and more widespread. But despite your efforts, it seems that God still doesn’t hear your prayers. So what’s the problem?
The words in the Holy Scriptures have provided us the wisdom that will guide us on how to pray effectively. To know if God will favor your prayers, here are 15 signs that you are praying properly according to the Bible.
1. You practice righteousness.
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16
2. You are faithful.
“And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” – Matthew 21:22
3. You don’t have any doubt.
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” – Mark 11:24
4. You have patience.
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.” – Psalm 40:1
5. What you ask is according to His will.
“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.” – 1 John 5:14
6. You do not ask with wrong motives.
“When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” – James 4:3
7. You follow God’s commandments and teachings.
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” – John 15:7
8. You are humble.
“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14
9. You pray according to your heart, not with your mouth.
“And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.” – Matthew 6:7
10. You do not practice wickedness.
“The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him.” – Proverbs 15:8
11. You are truthful.
“The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” – Psalm 145:18
12. You are kind and generous.
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” – Matthew 7:11
13. You are thankful.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” – Philippians 4:6
14. There is no hatred in your heart.
“I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;” – 1 Timothy 2:8
15. You confess your sins.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9
Remember that God doesn’t ignore us. He always listens to us. He always hears our prayers though we are sinners. He always gives us answers. However, His answer may not always be a Yes, it could also be a No. He may not also provide us an answer today but it could be tomorrow or some other day. But one thing is for sure… though God will give you an answer that you do not expect, that answer is the best answer, and He will give it in the perfect place and at the perfect time.
Therefore, be kind, honest, patient, righteous, humble and thankful, and always pray faithfully with love from your heart and according to His will.
Always keep in mind and in your heart the list above.
